There are probably some better sites as well. I can't ummm remember them right now, but if I somehow knew your email addy I might be able to send them when I remember.
There is some great stuff on emusic. If you've got the time, browse and sample the editor's picks for whatever genres you are into. Man, I love emusic.
eMusic and Bleep are the two places that I get music, and failing that, I just buy one of those old-fashioned CD-thinger-ma-bobs from Amazon. If you order a few at a time to get free shipping, Amazon's prices aren't that much more expensive than iTunes. Other than that, if you're after major label artists, you're pretty much stuck with major label outlets.
Get on Pandora and Last.fm and find some of the good stuff off the beaten path.
I'm a big fan of Pandora. Amazon will have to do for the rest. I'll miss the instant gratification. I guess I can still preview on iTunes. ;)
So expand your horizons! Popular does not equal good.

Seriously though, I don't really buy enough new music to make emusic worth it.
I really like audiolunchbox.com, which consists mostly of independent music you may have heard of, as opposed to independent music you for sure never heard of. I've found a lot of good support for genres in addition to "alternative" such as Dub Reggae, African Jazz, electronica and so on.

I tried "free 50 tracks" on emusic.com. They sell false Rihanna, Britney Spears etc. and call that stuff IN STILE OF. I could'd find any original tracks. In addition they charged £8.99 for a trial !!! I cancelled trial the same day I subscribed for it, but they charged me for that. To make the things worse I haven't got my money back !!! Never ever use their service.
